Housing Assistance for the Disabled

It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor. Each and every one of us needs the most basic of requirements: a safe home or shelter. This seems like common sense that we would all have the same access to obtaining this. However, it seems a bit different for people with disabilities. In addition to a safe home, they need that housing to have the proper equipment, layout and other options to cope with their disabilities. Without appropriate housing, a disabled person’s life is much more difficult.

In many cases, people with a disability also have a lessened ability to earn their livelihood. They may not be able to adequately care for themselves without assistance. In these situations they must seek financial help.

The federal government has put into place many programs that assist the disabled with their housing needs. The government has not only home loan programs, but programs that can also assist with rental housing. Some private agencies are given incentives for providing specialized housing for the disabled. And nearly every U.S. state has rules and regulations in place that provides housing assistance for the disabled.

If a person with a disability is living in a house, the owner may be entitled to grants to help make the house accessible. The grants can also help the owner with the upkeep and maintenance.

Recently the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced the availability of $40 million worth of grants. These grants will help disabled families or individuals obtain housing.

There are two types of these HUD grants available. The first are grants that are available are for rental assistance for families with a member or members who are either physically or mentally challenged. The other set of grants are again for rental assistance, but in this case is for families with disabilities.
