Disabled Women Can Face Double Discrimination

The battle for equal rights for women continues each and every day. However, it is important to remember a subset of that battle: support and equality for disabled women. Disabled women actually face a double whammy in the face of discrimination: they battle gender issues as well as a mental or physical disability. There are many laws on the books that are designed to provide equality to disabled women. There are many resources and information outlets that can help women – disabled or not – better understand their rights.

It is understood that disability discrimination is a common problem. However it is twice as big for women with disabilities. Disabled girls face rejection by society as well as the ensuing ridicule by peers. A disabled girl may grow to adulthood in the face of taunts and ridicule. Then when that woman wants to enter the workforce, she faces discrimination due to her gender, in addition to her disability. In many countries disabled women face discrimination about their skills as a mother, due to their disability. They may be rejected entirely by society.

Disabled men may still have to deal with their disability, however they are still considered to be in a higher level in the workplace than their female counterparts. There is a huge need for improvements in the fight for equality in terms of disabled women.

A Chicago-based organization, Feminist Response in Disability Activism, is one group that is addressing these concerns. Originally organized to protect the women within their community, it has expanded to include other states. It provides benefits and information to disabled women suffering from gender discrimination.

A web-based organization, Disabled Women on the Web was created as a place for disabled women to share their experiences and difficulties, as well as brainstorm for solutions.

There are many other organizations with the goal to eliminate discrimination against women with disabilities.
